Little Bird
Fernando Botero

The Hardy Family Art Collection proudly houses several works from Fernando Botero, who is considered one of the most recognized living artists from Latin America. Botero’s distinctive painting style, characterized by oversized, voluptuous figures and exaggerated still lifes, evolved into monumental bronze sculptures in the 1970s. His iconic and whimsically large Little Bird, one of the top artworks at Nemacolin, can be found outside The Chateau. Explore a bit further, and you will find another Botero sculpture on the patio outside the Grand Ballroom.

Jane Avril
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a pivotal figure of the Post-Impressionist movement, is renowned for vividly capturing the energy of fin-de-siècle Parisian nightlife. Emblematic of Toulouse-Lautrec’s signature style, this masterwork commissioned of Montmartre performer Jane Avril is marked by radical perspective shifts, flattened forms, and flowing lines, and is executed through a multi-stone lithographic process. In addition to Jane Avril, the Hardy Family Art Collection has five other original Toulouse-Lautrec lithographs, all displayed within The Chateau’s magnificent fine dining restaurant, Lautrec.

La Lune et les Fesses
Alexander Calder

Alexander Calder’s kinetic sculptures are among the earliest works to challenge the traditional notion of art as a static object. In his iconic mobiles, such as La Lune et les Fesses, Calder meticulously cut sheet metal into various shapes and linked them together in a delicate, chain-like system, allowing the flat metal elements to shift and sway with the movement of air. Several original gouaches on paper works from the American sculptor are also part of the Nemacolin art collection.

After the Prom
Norman Rockwell

A prolific and widely beloved illustrator, Norman Rockwell created more than Saturday Evening Post covers, crafting vivid depictions of mid-20th-century America that ranged from sentimental to socially poignant. His 1957 cover After the Prom, which captures the innocence and excitement of young love, is one of the top artworks at Nemacolin, and remains one of Rockwell’s most cherished works.

Charlie Parker
Edward Dwight, Jr.

Selected by President John F. Kennedy to become the first African American astronaut candidate, Edward Dwight, Jr. found a second career as a hugely successful artist creating large-scale memorials and public art projects that depict African American history. Nemacolin is home to twelve of his sculptures, including Charlie Parker from Dwight’s Jazz: An American Art Form series in bronze.

Psychogeography 44
Dustin Yellin

American contemporary artist Dustin Yellin creates mesmerizing, multi-layered sculptures that he describes as works of “frozen cinema.” Psychogeography #44 is part of Yellin’s acclaimed Psychogeographies series, where layers of imagery trace cultural, industrial, and scientific references across 28 meticulously arranged glass panels. Step back, and the collage resolves into a human form; move closer, and new discoveries emerge from every angle, revealing an endless depth of detail and meaning.

Tiffany Lamps
Louis Comfort Tiffany

A visionary of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Louis Comfort Tiffany was one of America’s most prolific and influential designers, shaping the Art Nouveau movement with his innovative approach to glassmaking. Nemacolin proudly displays numerous Tiffany masterpieces, including more than a dozen of his now-iconic lamps — featuring his beloved Wisteria and Dragonfly designs — currently found on display at the Falling Rock boutique hotel. In the atrium of The Grand Lodge, you’ll find a stunning stained-glass skylight arbor, with the the Wisteria Window Triptych nearby. It’s a striking example of Tiffany’s ability to “paint” with glass. Look closely and you’ll see marvelous rainbow glass helping to create the mirage and perspective.

He Is, They Are
Glenna Goodacre

One of the few women to create large public monuments, Glenna Goodacre is best known for her Vietnam Women’s Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, the Irish Famine Memorial in Philadelphia, and the design of the Sacagawea dollar coin. Her powerful sculpture He Is, They Are portrays the struggles of Native Americans, with the figure’s hands symbolically “tied” behind his back. Another favorite for photos and selfies is The Old Man and His Dog. This piece proves that the enjoyment and interaction with art is a delight for all ages.

Birds of America
John James Audubon

In 1819, with nothing more than a gun, artist’s materials, and a young assistant, John James Audubon embarked on an ambitious journey to document America’s birdlife. The result was Birds of America, a monumental collection of 435 life-size, vividly detailed watercolors. Today, it remains the definitive masterpiece of wildlife illustration, setting the standard for ornithological art. Recently restored, these incredible books are available for viewing with an advance appointment.

Violet Mystique Chandelier
Dale Chihuly

As an artist whose first training was in design and architecture, Dale Chihuly’s approach to each installation is to first ask: How will the artwork interact with the space? From color, to scale, to translucency, to form, he evaluates each aspect of the artwork against the purpose, lighting, and energy of the space. Chihuly’s chandeliers, he feels, are an especially compelling way to create a conversation between a room and the artwork defining it. Found in the smoking lounge of Nightcap, hundreds of blown pieces have been put together to form the magnificence of this custom-curated chandelier. It’s a striking, gravity-defying encounter with color, light, and form, and the hues and depth vary with the morning’s light and the evening’s delight.
